Ebook About
** Library Journal's Editor's Pick! ** Philadelphia 1793. Hercules, President George Washington’s chef, is a fixture on the Philadelphia scene. He is famous for both his culinary prowess and for ruling his kitchen like a commanding general. He has his run of the city and earns twice the salary of an average American workingman. He wears beautiful clothes and attends the theater. But while valued by the Washingtons for his prowess in the kitchen and rewarded far over and above even white servants, Hercules is enslaved in a city where most black Americans are free. Even while he masterfully manages his kitchen and the lives of those in and around it, Hercules harbors secrets-- including the fact that he is learning to read and that he is involved in a dangerous affair with Thelma, a mixed-race woman, who, passing as white, works as a companion to the daughter of one of Philadelphia's most prestigious families. Eventually Hercules’ carefully crafted intrigues fall apart and he finds himself trapped by his circumstance and the will of George Washington. Based on actual historical events and people, The General's Cook, will thrill fans of The Hamilton Affair, as they follow Hercules' precarious and terrifying bid for freedom.

Book The General's Cook: A Novel Review :

I have always enjoyed books that take a “minor” character (we are all major in our own mind) and flesh him or her out. Anita Diamont’s “The Red Tent” stands out as a classic example. So I appreciated reading about a minor character, Hercules, the enslaved cook of George Washington, the most major character in American history. The lives of the people who built the wealth and supported the lives of the historical figures of our nation’s founding are almost never explored. Ramin Ganeshram took four years to investigate the life and times of all classes of people in the Philadelphia and Mount Vernon of the early years of post-colonial America. Her deep research is evident in her depictions of the tools used in the kitchen and the characters’ movements through the markets, docks and alleys of Philadelphia, and even the weather.Ganeshram clearly portrays the constant need of the enslaved and indentured servants in the Washington household to keep an eye out on who might be monitoring their movements and actions. There’s the need to maneuver through the dictates of one’s master or with other enslaved staff’s attempts to assert their own marginal authority, and to maintain whatever shred of autonomy one could in such an environment. I balked at casual and permitted cruelty of Washington’s adult granddaughter, Betsey Custis, to her enslaved servant, Oney Judge, who has just been "gifted" to Betsey by Washington’s wife, Martha. The most dangerous maneuver an enslaved person could attempt would be to escape slavery. Ganeshram includes the abolitionist culture of Philadelphia and we see how this society assisted several characters. Though Pennsylvania had the law that enslaved persons within its boundaries would be considered free after six months of state residence, Ganeshram illustrated the popular attitude of censure toward affectionate relationships between black and white citizens. Does she allow the abolitionists to assist a mixed-race couple to live together beyond the last pages of her book? I won’t give any spoilers here.Founding families, marginalized enslaved peoples, artists of note, tavern keepers of note, Ganeshram weaves people of the time into her tale of one complicated character, Hercules. Both my husband and myself lost sleep reading ahead to find out what she would craft for his ending, as well as those of other complementary characters.A worthwhile addition to any historical fiction library!
I had a hard time liking this book until about page 172 ... and this would not have been the case IF the author had opened with her background story in a foreword rather than putting it at the end. That change would have altered my perspective and increased my enjoyment. It was interesting to learn that many of her characters were actual historical people with documents recording their actions and events... her source material. The writing style is choppy and often too abrupt.... like it was written from stacks of note cards collected over her 5 years of research. But having said all that, I ended up quite liking the peek into life styles and habits during the time of Washington’s presidency.
